Evaluating the Whatsminer M21 & M21S Bitcoin Miners

The Mirobt WhatsMiner M21 and M21S bitcoin miners were launched in May 2019. There are 5 models in the M20 bitcoin miner series. All these 5 bitcoin mining machines make use of 8nm Samsung chips.

Whatsminer M20

 

This model comes with a 45T computing power. The power consumption ratio of the M20 machine is around 48 Watts/T with a 10 A power socket.

 

Whatsminer M21

 

This model comes with a computing power of 28T. It is provided with a 10 A socket, and the ratio of power consumption is 60W/ T.

 

Whatsminer M21B

 

This bitcoin mining machine is targeted toward old customers. It comes with a general-purpose computing power board. It is supported by BitMicro M3. This machine is still using the casing, controller board, and the power supply of the M3 machine. Thus, it is a low-cost version that helps to improve utilization.

 

Whatsminer M21S

 

The computing power of the Whatsminer M21S is 56T. 60 Watt/ T is the power consumption ratio of this model. This miner machine also supports a low power mode with 30T computing power. During the low power mode, the ratio of power consumption is around 50 Watt/T. This model requires a 16A socket.

 

Whatsminer M20S

 

This model is also known as the hash rate king. It comes with 68T computing power. The ratio of power consumption is 48 Watt/T. It requires a 16 A socket. It has the biggest computing power and the best ratio of power consumption among all the 5 models.

In this article, we will evaluate the Whatsminer M21-28T and the Whatsminer M21S-50T.

 

Whatsminer M21-28T

 

The Whatsminer M21- 28T is more or less the same as the Whatsminer M3. This model comes with a power supply that is long in design, and the body is a short one.

The Whatsminer M21- 28T is designed in such a way that you can use the same power board as the Whatsminer M3 machine also. It allows the users to buy the power board and take the M3 components and assemble it. The control board of this machine does the same function as the M3. It helps to avoid the up-gradation process. Thus, it helps to lower your cost.

The Whatsminer M21- 28T has 28T computing power and a 60-Watt power consumption ratio as per the specifications. This mining machine comes with a size of 38 x 13 x 22 cm. It weighs around 6.7 kg.

The Whatsminer M21- 28T comes with a standard power supply, P5-12-2200-v1. This power supply unit is capable of providing 12.8 V DC. The maximum rated output of this power supply is 172 A. It supports a 10 A socket.

There is a specially designed aluminum profile in the Whatsminer M21- 28T power supply section. This frame helps to fix the power supply unit and cable management. It is also helpful in handling the whole miner machine.

The control board of the Whatsminer M21- 28T is connected to the hash board with the help of wires. Therefore, you need to check and ensure that there is no loose cable connection before powering ON the machine. If there are any loose wires in the machine, you will get errors during the process. It can even damage the boards in the machine. So, always double-check the machine before switching ON.

This miner machine comes with a couple of 12038 fans. One of the fans is used for circulating the air, and the other fan is used as the exhaust. Both are 12 V fans, rated for 2.8 A.

It is quite easy to connect the Whatsminer M21- 28T miner machine. But you need to ensure that both the network and power cable are connected. The total power consumed by the Whatsminer M21- 28T is found to be 1790 Watts. The noise level was found to be 80 dB. The noise is measured at a one-meter distance from the mining machine.

During the test, we got a nominal computing power of 28.45T. You can see this reading on the console. The average computing power is around 28.53T. This average power is calculated on the basis of a 24-hour time. We got a power consumption ratio of 62.74 Watt/T.

Whatsminer M21S- 50T

 

The appearance of the Whatsminer M21S- 50T is more or less the same as the Whatsminer M20S-68T. The only difference between these two machines is the computing power. The rest of the miner features remain the same for both these miners. The size of the Whatsminer M21S- 50T is 39 x 15.5 x 24 cm. This miner weighs around 1055 gm. So, the weight of the machine is very less when compared to Whatsminer M21- 28T.

This miner machine makes use of the new P21-12-3600-V1 power supply unit. You can get 12 V @ 285 A and +12 V @ 12 A DC from this power supply. There is a voltage regulator cable in the system that connects the control board with the power supply.

The power supply of the Whatsminer M21S- 50T makes use of the 16 A connector. The power cable uses a 3-core cable. The diameter of the wire is 2 sq meters. The plug used in the system is not a standard one. So, you need an adapter to convert it into a 16 A socket.

The total power consumed by the Whatsminer M21S- 50T is around 3380 Watts. The noise level was found to be 100 dB. The noise is measured at a one-meter distance from the mining machine.

During the test, we got a nominal computing power of 50.75T. You can see this reading on the console. The average computing power is around 51.04T. This average power is calculated on the basis of a 24-hour time. We got a power consumption ratio of 66.22 Watt/T.

You will also see a low power mode option on the settings page of the Whatsminer M21S- 50T. The total power consumption of the miner machine after selecting this mode is around 1500 Watts. So, the power consumption is almost half than the one in the normal mode.

Thus, we were able to get a power consumption ratio of 62.74 Watt/T on Whatsminer M21- 28T and   66.22 Watt/T on Whatsminer M21S- 50T. So, the power ratio is more for the Whatsminer M21S- 50T.
