What Precautions to take for Cryptocurrency mining?

If you are into cryptocurrency mining, then there are some precautions that you must take. In this article, we will have a look at the various precautions that you need to take for regular cryptocurrency mining operations. This list is for the Antminer mining system.

1. Switch Off the Power Before Maintenance works

You must not start doing the maintenance work on the miner when there is power present. Switch off all the power coming to the miner. Wait for 2 to 5 secs before starting the maintenance. This time delay will ensure that all the big capacitors present in the miner board get adequately discharged. If there is power present, then it can damage the main board of the miner. So, you will have to send back the device to the manufacturer for repair. Thus, you will end up spending more.

 

2. Check the Orientation of the 6-pin Interface

You can find a 6-pin interface for connecting the cable. Before connecting the cable, check and ensure that you insert the cable in the correct orientation. If you insert the cable in the wrong direction, you will end up damaging the control board.

 

3. Connecting Power Supply

It is possible to connect a miner to multiple or a single power supply. But I strongly recommend connecting one miner to one power supply only. If you connect multiple power supplies, then there is a chance of damaging the hashboard in the miner. For the proper working of the miner, only one power supply must drive one hashboard.

 

4. Protection from Electro Static Discharge (ESD)

There is a direct connection from IC pins to the fan interface and the flat cable. If you have not discharged the ESD and touched the control board, it will result in damage to the IC pins. Thus, the whole miner will get damaged. So, make sure to discharge your ESD before touching the miner boards.

 

5. Sequence for Powering On

There is a particular sequence to follow for powering on the miner. You need to switch on the power for the hashboard initially. It is to be followed by the control board power. If you are using a single supply for the miner, ensure to give power to the equipment only after connecting the control board and the hashboard.

 

6. Power Cord Specifications

There are some power cord specifications to be maintained for the miner. For example, if you are using a 220V power source, you must use a 10A rated power cord having a length less than or equal to 1.5m. If 110V is your power source, the current rating of the power cord must be 17A, and the length must be less than or equal to 1.5m.

 

7. Power Cord Interface

The power supply uni of the APW series from the Antminer uses a C13 connector. This connector is the standard power plug used in desktops. You can get in touch with the manufacturers to know about the other power supply specifications.

 

8. Total Power Consumption of the Miner

The power supply you are planning to use for the miner must be rated at least 20 percent higher than the recommended power ratings for the miner. It is to ensure better performance of the miner. If the power specifications of the power supply are lower or equal to the miner’s power requirements, the miner will not perform properly.

 

9. Prevention of Accumulation of Dust particles

You must always ensure no dust accumulation happens on the miner’s heat sink. If the sink has dust accumulation, it will result in the triggering of the temperature protection circuitry, and thus it will halt all the operation of the miner. There is an air duct just before the miner’s heat sink. You can check this part to ensure that there are no dust blocks.

 

10. Ground Wire

If there are ungrounded wires in the system, it may cause electric leakage. It can even lead to power supply damage. This issue is not present in the case of home mining.

 

11. Lightning

Lightning can damage your whole mining system. So, proper protection is needed to safeguard the entire mining system from lightning. It can damage all the mining equipment. There are no lightning concerns for home mining.

12. High Temperature Limit

If the temperature inside the mining farm is very high, it will reduce the life of the miner and can damage it. You must ensure that the temperature inside never goes beyond 35 degrees Celsius.

 

13. Network Issues

There can be network issues at times. If you are able to fix the network issue in 15 min, it is a good idea not to switch off the miner. Some network outages may take more time to fix. In such situations, you must switch off the miner. You can power it off when there is a minor crash or an unstable network connection.

 

14. Load on the router

You will have to invest in a router when you buy a miner. The router must be able to manage the load from the miner. You can always check with the router manufacturer about the load specification of the router.

 

15. Power Wiring Sequence

There is no specific sequence to follow for the 6-pin cable that connects the power supply to the miner. But you need to ensure that the orientation of the cable is in the right direction.

 

16. POE Function

You must not connect the miner directly to the router with the POE feature. It can result in damage to the control board. If it is home mining, then there are no concerns.

 

17. Preventing Moisture

Moisture can create some issues when you use the water curtain. There will be the absorption of moisture by the accumulated dust. It will result in the corrosion of the hashboard. It can even lead to total damage of the hashboard.

So, try to keep the humidity level below 65 percent to safeguard the hashboard from corrosion. If you are using the miner near coastal areas, the salt water present in the environment can accelerate the corrosion.

 

18. Voltage specifications for the miner

The miner takes an input voltage of 12V DC. The power will provide this voltage. The power supply will generate the 12V DC from a 220V AC grid.

 

19. Indoor Low Temperature Limit

The temperature at which the miner operates is a matter of concern. If the temperature is less than 5 degrees Celsius, you can see a reduction in hash speed. It affects the performance of the miner directly. So, make sure that the miner is always operated in an environment above 5 degrees Celsius.

 

20. Network

Only Antminer S1 supports WiFi. The rest of the Antminers only support wired LAN cable connection.

 

21. Network Cable Specification

You need to use the standard RJ45 cable as the network cable for connecting miners to the network.
