The Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine from Bitmain comes with the second generation BM1397 chip. This ASIC chip makes use of the 7nm technology. It is for hiding three things. They are the power supply unit, connecting cable of the control box, and the connection pieces of the computing power board.

This design has ensured that only fan cables are visible from the outside. Thus, it helps provide a more concise look at the miner machine. In the Antminer S15 machine, there is an issue with the exposed connection piece. This design of the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine helps solve that issue. Thus, it helps to protect the miner machine from a possible short circuit from the rack.

There are a couple of things that you need to take care before running the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine. They are given below.

  • The Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine will need 2 power cables. But the miner does not come with 2 power cables.
  • The total power consumed by the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine will cross 2200 W. So, the 10 A (220 V) power socket will not be enough for the proper functioning of the miner.

You need to connect the power cable of the miner machine first to the power socket. After that, you can connect the Ethernet cable. The other end of the Ethernet cable needs to be connected to the router. You can switch ON the miner machine after making these two connections. You can find the IP address of the miner by going into the router and checking for a device with the name, Antminer.

You can enter the IP address details in the network browser. It will push you to the page that asks for username and passwords. If you are using the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine for the first time, both the username and the password will be root.

There is a chance that hackers can gain access to your miner machine. So, you need to ensure to change the password for the miner after your first access. You can go to the system/ administration page to make the modification. You need to enter the present password in the first column. After that, input the new password in the 2nd and 3rd columns. Once you have entered these details, you can go ahead and click on the Save& Apply button. Now onwards, you need to use the new password details to log in to the machine.

Now, you will have to enter the mining pool details. In order to do that, you need to go to the Miner Configuration page. You can enter the mining pool address, name of the miner and backup mining pool address and name here. The Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine supports two operating modes. They are the standard mode and the low power mode. You can switch between these modes easily using the one-click option in this page. Once you are done with all the settings, you can click the Save & Apply option to register all these settings.

Testing the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine

The Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine comes with two modes. They are the standard mode and the low power mode. We will do the tests in the normal mode first. The ambient temperature during this test is around 25 degrees Celsius. The test is run for a duration of 24 hours. The ambient noise value is around 45 dB.Antminer S17 35

290 W is the standby power consumption of the miner machine during this test. There is no network connection to the miner during this measurement of power consumption. The level of noise at the start-up is around 85 dB.

Standard mode test

We will do the power measurements first. The total power consumed by the machine after a duration of 12 hours is around 2648 W. The peak value of power consumption is 2660 W. These values match the specifications shared by the manufacturer. There are 4 fans for removing the heat from the miner. The speed of rotation of the fan is around 6000 rpm. The level of noise is around 86 dB. The level of noise is around 77 dB when measured at a distance of 2 m. The noise produced by the power supply unit of the miner is more than the noise produced by other parts of the mining machine.

Low power mode test

You can select the low power mode option in the mining pool settings page to switch the miner into low power mode. Now, you can see that the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine is running at a lower frequency. The level of noise and the temperature readings remain unchanged in the low power mode. The power consumed by the miner machine is lowered to 2406 W. So, there is a 240 W reduction in power in the low power mode.

The measured temperature value at the socket side is around 66 degrees. The power cable temperature is in the range of 30 to 40 degrees Celsius. If you plan to use the Antminer S17 Bitcoin miner machine in low power mode for a long time, it is not recommended to connect it to the 10 A socket.
